The days are so expansive when you don’t have a to-do list. When you don’t multi-task. When you focus on one thing at a time which could be doing nothing.
I’ve been fortunate to have friends give me their keys when they’ve gone away. Harvey and Sharron did that and I was able to write in their condo uninterrupted for several months. Thank you Harvey and Sharron! This time I stayed at Rebecca and Ray’s. They have a cat so I figured I ought to stay over so Max had company. He’s such a sweetheart and my new best bud.
All you have to do is pick a place you like. Tell your friends you’d be happy to house sit when they go away. If they’d throw in the car, that would be good. If they have a cat and you love cats, you’re very fortunate.
Life should always be this simple. Watering the garden. Taking a walk. Relocating a moth and a bee from the front window Scooping out some cottage cheese for lunch.
I looked through a novel manuscript from the nineties to see if any of its content would suit some new poems. Maybe. I read some William Stafford poetry. I looked at email and saw there was a party. Nope. I’m away on holiday – only ten minutes from home but how often do we take time to just relax and be. Renew and refresh. Interesting don’t you think that Rebecca and Ray’s initials are R and R.
When you’re picking a place to house sit, try for an ocean and mountain view, a garden of lavender, delphiniums and a huge yellow rosebush. Look for a cat who naps with you and a stereo with excellent speakers. Insist on a comfortable bed and thick bath towels. WiFi is good but really not necessary. A wine cellar and liquor cabinet are great but try not to over indulge – unless it’s just to watch two hummingbirds dance outside the window as you listen to the rain.
